FABOLOUS - LOSO'S WAY

It seems with stripes earned from previous successes with his last four (4) albums and miscellaneous projects with artists like Syleena Johnson and DJ Clue, Fabolous continues to be relevant in a growing music culture in which independent and mainstream artists are all makling a big progress. It should come as no surprise that this smooth sounding Brooklyn bred MC would bless his fans with a fifth album that comes complete with its own movie. Now a days, merely dropping an album is almost not enough. A rapper has to release combo projects at once. Like I did with my independent book and album, you will find most rappers are either shooting a movie or writing a book in conjunction with their album.

Fabolous released his hotly anticipated album and movie combo entitled LOSO’s WAY on July 28th 2009 and it landed on the number one (1) spot on the billboards 200 chart. Like my album ‘While I’m Still Young – The Talking Drums 1.2v’ plays a soundtrack to my new book entitled ‘My Book Of Chrymes’. Fabolous’ new album does the same thing with its accompaning DVD called LOSO’s WAY the movie. The movie is a thirty three (33) minute film about street life from Fab's point of view. Swizz Beats, DJ Khaled, Jadakiss, Styles P, DJ Envy, Ryan Leslie and DJ Clue all appeared cameo in the movie while the album spins hits like ‘Put It In The Bag' – featuring The Dream and
‘Everything, Everyday, Everywhere' – featuring Keri Hilson.

If someone was to ask a stone cold hip hop head sporadically, who their favorite rapper was or for them to name their top five greatest (5) MCs of all time, it’s possible that they will forget to name Fabolous on their list. But if reminded I'm sure they will say they love his music. This MC is one of the smoothest in the game and like any real O.G he has been consistent with his ‘get in, get out’ street code classics. Born to a Dominican father and an African American mother, he grew up in Brooklyn, New York but he raps with a southern-ish flavor. Ever since he got invited to DJ Clue’s WQHT Hot 97 show fresh out of the twelfth grade in high school, Fabolous has made the streets grow to respect his game through his music and his subtle influence. Then came his first record deal with Desert Storm Records and the distribution deal with Elektra Records. Before long he was doing mixtapes with DJ Clue. Fabolous made a track record that totally matched with his credibility. Before long Def Jam became interested and the rest is …

If you’re a real hip hop head you will remember his 2001 debut album entitled Ghetto Fabolous because the radios would not stop playing his single; Can’t Deny it feat. Nate Dogg or 'Holla Back (Uh Uh). That album charted at number four (4) on the billboards 200 and garnered a platinum plaque with two more major radio saturated singles. That was around the time when basketball Jerseys were in and every real G stacked a wardrobe full of them bearing the name of their favorite players and their favorite teams. Fab followed the Ghetto Fab album with Street Dreams, his second album. Of course that was a smash hit album as well. Critics didn’t like the gangster element in his lyrics but the streets loved it. It was another meager success and Fab was now in play with big industry heads like Jay Z, Lil Mo, Jagged Edge, P. Diddy and a few more big wigs from down south and even as far as the west coast. This time around even fans from other genres were stumping their feet to ‘Can’t Let You Go' - featuring Lil Mo and Mike Shorey and 'Into You' - featuring Ashanti. Fab became known for his signature half yellow gold half platinum diamond chains, watches and bracelets. Street Dreams went gold and peaked at number three (3) on the billboards 200 chart.

In 2004 Fab delivered his third album entitled ‘Real Talk’ which spunned the hit single ‘Breath’. It reached number six (6) on the billboard and it went on to earn another well envied gold plaque for the F.A.B.O.L.O.U.S man. He went silent for three (3) years after 'Real Talk' during which time new faces like 50 Cent, Young Jeesy, The Game, Pleirs, Young Joc, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Gucci Maine all took turns on the world stage. Mainstream hip hop changed a few faces during the last five (5) years. In fact, the last decade brought its share of new rappers much like the 90’s did. Only this time independent artists had some effective new tools at their disposal and began to learn how to use the internet to their advantage. They learned how to record and release professional albums that came complete with hit singles, features and professional quality music videos. BET began airring independent music videos while major radio stations all over America started to buzz with independent and mainstream hits alike. Independent labels improved on their promotional efforts and lived to see a successful turn out without any support from a major record company. Thanks to indie artists, the music industry transformed faster than major labels adjust to it.

Some independent artists such as myself
(Freddy Will) who wanted to be successful commercially got their day in the limelight thanks to indie radio stations, myspace, facebook and selling records out of mom and pop stores and on street corners across the globe, from youtube to independent musical outlets across the world through the internet. Amidst this period, Fabolous made a return to th stage with his fourth studio album entitled ‘From Nothin’ to Somethin’ in 2007. That album spun off with hit singles like ‘Make You Better featuring Ne-yo' and ‘Baby Don’t Go featuring T. Pain and Jermaine Dupri. It came in at number two (2) on the billboard 200 charts earnd Fab yet another Gold plaque. Now with LOSO's WAY being his first album to debut at number one (1) on the charts, Fab is finally going to get bumped into the favorite MC's list of most hip hop fans.
