Hiphop Kulture has its roots in Africa. The art, the music, the elements [DeeJay, Emcee, Dance, and Graffiti] can all be traced to mannerisms found in African traditions. [See my blog: 10 Distinct African Music and Dance Cultures 1 & 2]. Slavery displaced black people from their cultural environment. The black community harvested its reasoning on slave row. This is how black people maintained their culture under those circumstances during that time. Segregation and racism came after abolition. These circumstances led to the “hood.”

During the abolition movement, there was an African American by the name of Prince Hall. He became instrumental in the repatriation of freed Blacks to Africa. Hall contributed to the establishment of the West African nation of Liberia. And it became a safe haven for freed Blacks returning to Africa. He also established Prince Hall Freemasonry. Back then the people knew it the African Lodge. Prince Hall masons went on to unite Blacks and provide protection for black entertainers. The whites isolated black entertainer as they traveled through racially hostile parts of the country. It’s such protection that the original Black Panthers, Crips, and Bloods intended to provide for the black community before the justice system implicated them, and assassinated or imprisoned their founders.

Being a Five Percenter eludes to the notion that only ten percent of all people know the absolute truth. Those are the elites who have successfully brainwashed and kept eighty-five percent of the world in total darkness or ignorance. They intend to be the only ones who have economic and psychological domination of the masses. However, there is five percent of people who know the truth. They intend to enlighten those who the system had not yet brainwashed. And teach them about knowledge of self, how to communicate with God and the inhabitants of the earth – us.

The Monotheistic Aspect Explained

Let’s skim over the primary constructs of the Five Percent Nation. In my book, Hiphop KruZade, I explained in detail how the connection to Hip Hop’s theological umbilical cord. I told how to closely associate them with the monotheistic education from Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Or how we based the entire creed on those teachings. There is a deviation from the Abrahamic teaching though it’s the essential staple; similar to Islam and the Nation of Islam. The Five Percent Nation or Nation of Gods and Earths was created by an African-American known as Clarence 13x [known as “the Father”], who was tutored by Malcolm X.

He was also a member of the Nation of Islam. He left the Nation of Islam because he did not accept its leader, Wallace Muhammad as his god.  Clarence 13x preferred to be his own god instead. Therefore the idea is to be in control of yourself – to be your own god. A Five Percenter believes life began in Africa, black men are gods/or kings, and black women are the earth or the salt of the earth. It is almost parallel with Rastafarian teachings but not quite the same since Rastafarian is linked to Christianity while Five Percenters remain Muslim. [Notice the small g at the beginning of the god that represents men and the capital G at the beginning of the God that constitutes the Almighty]. *
